Species Identification of Bacteria and Fungi from Solid and Liquid Culture Media by MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry

For more than one hundred years after the death of Robert Koch (May 27th, 1910) microbiological diagnostic remained similar. As it used to be, species identification is predominantly based on morphological aspects (e.g. Gram positive vs. Gram negative) and the ability of microorganisms to metabolize certain energy sources (e.g. carbohydrates and lipids). Consequently, identification of bacterial and fungal species has only been slightly accelerated within the past hundred years and usually lasts several days.
